While the Marshall Superlead Plexi is synonymous with Rock guitar, the 50W version is often overlooked or it is handled as the "smaller brother". But fact is that the 50W and 100W plexi amps are decidedly different sounding from each other. Neither is better than the other - they are inherenrly different and their differences play to different strengths.
The 50 Watt JMP-50 Lead spec amp has a beautiful compression and spongy feel that works perfectly for leads in particular, or gives you a softer and more forgiving feel in general.
The lower headroom power amp of the 50 watter also results in considerably higher amounts of gain - this little amp is a real screamer and will effortlessly dish out 70's and 80's style rock tones.
Unlike the reissues and boutique takes on this model, it has a very unique spec - there are no grid stopper and screen grid resistors on the output tubes, which is bad news for tube life, but good news for tone - it has a raw, chewy and undeniably authentic Marshall tone for that ther is no substitute.
The heaters of the EL34 tubes in this amp will instantly behave like a make-shift magic-eye tube in that it will show you clearly when a signal is present by glowing up like candles. And all the electrons that are stripped from the cathodes under these extreme tempratures will give you the most vicious and back to the roots Marshall DNA you could ask for.
A pair of vintage Mullard EL34's are at the heart of this beast and are one of the rare tubes that will take the punishment that they are exposed to in this scircuit.
This particular 1969 plexi model 1987 JMP-50 Lead amp is in pristine museum condition and untouched apart from changed electrolytic caps and performs flawslessly, as if it just had left the factory. The 69 plexi model is the last iteration of the plexi lead panel amps before the metal panel era was ntroduced, while sonically it bridges the gap between plexi and early metal panel, as it features the full-on Lead spec formula (two .68uF cathode bypass caps and the klarge 5000pF bright cap among other things).
If you want a classic Marshall for the classic and 70's hard rock thing without compromises - this is your ticket.
The set features 26 full captures of the amp (cab baked into the capture). The amp was recorded through a 1968 Marshall 1982B 4X12 with Celestion G12H30 55Hz Pulsonic coned speakers, which are the most iconic 60's Marshall speaker Used by Hendrix, Pag and countless others. The mics used were 2x Royer R121, a Beyerdynamic M160 and a Neumann U87. Please refer to the full list of included captures in the product photo section.
