Among the FNDR BMAN line, the Blackface AB165 circuit stands out as the one that is capable of fierce rock tones unlike any other FNDR, especially from the Blackface era.

It has more gain on tap than the others thanks to another gain stage and it is much more full in the midrange. When breaking up a bit more, it has a very unique bite to the attack unlike any other amp i've played, which lends itself perfectly for the rock genres. It is a stout and tight sounding amp with a quick and precise response.

Besides that it has big, round, bold and bubbly clean tones and a beautiful transition into breakup. It loves the company of pedals as well.

One very interesting fact about the AB165 BMAN is that it was THE amp that both of the first and until this day most legendary boutique amp builders used as a starting point for their own most iconic products - it is the start of the Dumble ODS (where Howard drew the inspiration from seeing Robben Ford playing through a boosted AB165 Bassman) AND the Trainwreck Express, which was Ken Fishers brain child. Dumble and Trainwreck amps are the two most desirable amp brands in the world today and it is incredible that they both meet at the AB165. None of them sounds like any of the others for sure - small changes go a long way and drastic changes even more so. But still - it is also from this aspect that this amp holds a very special place in the electric guitar history.

Although it is a lot less popular than many other Blackface era FNDR amps, quite a few big names have played the AB165 variant, including Philip Sayce, Kurt Cobain, Jack White, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Noel Gallagher, Peter Frampton and many more. Unlike its Tweed brother, it is also actually a quite well regarded bass amp and is used by many artists for guitar and bass still today.
